Less Controlled HRMax Test

To carry out this test, the athlete simply begins exercising at a medium to high intensity and continues to do so until they cannot carry on – again, after a suitable warm-up. At this point HRMax will be reached. This test should last between 4 and 10 minutes.

Lactate Levels and Lactate Threshold (LT)

LT threshold tests generally take the form of an incremental increase in effort against a controlled resistance, such as treadmill belt speed. Blood samples are taken, usually from the ear, for analysis of lactate accumulation, which makes this a far from practical everyday test (for more details on lactate, see Lactate and Glycolysis and Lactate and the Production of Lactic Acid).

Recent research questions the role of lactate threshold as an accurate predictor of endurance potential. It is probably far better to use measures such as time and distance tests and, in the case of more experienced performers, reflexive feedback as performance indicators.
